Biosecurity tips and tricks

What is biosecurity?

Biosecurity includes practices or procedures that are put in place to reduce the risk of pathogens between animals or humans. Here are some general husbandry practices that are recommended for keeping livestock animals disease free.

  • Isolate sick, new or traveling animals at least 12 feet away from healthy animals for a minimum of 14 days.
  • Care for, feed, and water healthy animals before sick animals to prevent spreading germs to the healthy animals.
  • Keep separate equipment (shovels, wheelbarrows, buckets, etc,) for home and for shows, and thoroughly sanitize equipment in between use.
  • Wash hands before and after working with all animals.
  • Limit visitors to the farm.
  • Have a boot washing station available for guests.
  • Work with a local veterinarian to implement vaccine protocols.
