calf drinking milk from a bucketHow do we reduce illness and mortality in neonatal calves? What are the management strategies that help minimize exposure to infectious diseases or improve resistance to disease? How do we do all these things AND minimize the use of antibiotics so that we can reduce the chances for antimicrobial resistance?

A research team at the School of Veterinary Medicine at Washington State University has been looking at understanding and trying to answer these questions.

Salmonella, E. coli, rotavirus, coronavirus, and cryptosporidia can all affect pre-weaned calves and result in diarrhea, and sometimes, death. Calf raisers use antibiotics to prevent and treat some of these causes of disease. The concern is that the use of antibiotics might result in resistant bacteria that could possibly infect people. All the studies presented at this site try to address animal health and strategies for reducing antimicrobial use.
